Giselle Baca – 2016 Youth of the Year
“If it wasn’t for the Club, I wouldn’t have been able to get through my High School career. The Club has supported me ever since the first time I walked through their doors, and now I am on my way to walking my High School stage.”
– Giselle Baca
We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that Giselle has put toward this competition! Youth of the Year (YOY) is awarded to the Club member that has demonstrated exceptional service to the Club, community and family, as well as a commitment to academic success, good leadership and a pursuit of life goals.
Giselle initially came to the Club because she felt a strong need in her life to volunteer and make a difference in the lives of others. She soon learned the Club had much more to offer, giving her a solid base of friends, encouraging role models, opportunities to learn about herself and most importantly, a place where she felt she belongs. In her speech, Giselle spoke directly to the role Club has played in her life:
“The impact that the Club has had on me has made me the young lady that I am today. Being surrounded by people who want to see you succeed is wonderful because the contagious positivity can lead to your own great ideas and actions.”
Giselle is graduating from Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan. She will be attending college at Wheeling Jesuit University, where she received a full ride scholarship. She is seeking a degree in Business Administration. Giselle will be greatly missed, and we couldn’t be more proud that she is leaving with a passion and plan for the future!
About Youth of the Year
Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year recognition is the highest honor a Club member can achieve. The program celebrates youth who have overcome enormous odds and demonstrated exceptional character and accomplishments. Honorees are recognized for service to their Club and community, academic performance and contributions to their family. Whether or not a Club member actually goes on to become Youth of the Year, the time and effort invested in the development of each individual helps these young people become all they are capable of being. That is what makes the Youth of the Year program an effective year-round development program for all members.
